This Sunday, September 19th marks the end of an era of LUV (love, unity and vision) as the National Black L.U.V. Festival (NBLF) is staged to produce its last festival this weekend. Due to the sluggish economy and lack of financial support for the festival this will most likely be our last year, but we fought a good fight and are moving forward to focus on our non-profit, Social Art and Culture, celebrating artist for social change, explains Karen Baker, Chair and NBLF Committee Executive.
NBLF was inspired by the Million Man March (1993) when NBLF founder Kymone Freeman felt charged to inform and enlighten communities on social injustice, healthcare and education issues. Freeman and the NBLF Executive Committee combined art and activism for over a decade, producing the annual FREE one-day multi-cultural outdoor LUV fest.

NBLF has united the Nations Capital by encouraging economic growth with local and national vendors and award winning programs; Eco-Green, Health Pavilion and HIV/AIDS mobilization with one of the highest testing rates in the country. The LUV Festival wouldnt be love without stellar live performances on the main stage. Over the years artist such as Kurtis Blow, Raheem DeVaughn, Dr. Cornel West, Afrika Bambatta, Amiri Baraka and the Last Poets have graced the main stage, to name a few. And this year’s closing festival has highly anticipated vendors, performances and attendance rates.
In many indigenous cultures the number 13 (this years finale LUV festival) signifies spiritual and ritual significance that equates to blessings and happiness.
Come out and support the end of a beautiful era of the National Black Luv Festival and this year begins the festival with Yoga in the Park, courteousy of Yoga District, from 12:30 – 1:00pm. Also, celebrate the blessing of a new movement of Social Art and Culture, (SAAC) a non-profit dedicated to “Art Activism,”creating workshops and other apertures where artists Shine Brightly!
