May 5th isnt just about guacamole, chips, carnitas, Tequilla shots and Mexican beer. No really, it isnt. Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday that celebrates the Mexican Armys victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla, May 5, 1862. Strangely, this war helped end aid from the French to Confederates in the American Civil War. What a celebration, eh?
Nonetheless, the restaurant and wine and spirit industry monetize Cinco de Mayo, not unlike a plethora of other commercialized holidays developed for consumer consumption, from beer to lip balm to zoo festivals.
